MSNBC sees the departure of Joy Reid as the network cancels the news anchor’s show “TheReidOut”.
“This is horrible. This is a disgrace. Joy Reid has been calling out all the horrible things that the Republicans and Trump has been doing for years, so to see her go is saddening,” said Kevin Jones, a first-year political science major on the pre-law track.
Reports first began circling over the weekend about MSNBC canceling “TheReidOut” online. MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler later confirmed Reid’s departure Monday afternoon, per The Associated Press.
“Joy Reid is leaving the network, and we thank her for her countless contributions over the years,” said Kutler.
Reid’s show “TheReidOut” was a segment of MSNBC’s evening program since 2020. Reid conducted interviews with politicians and other newsmakers and dove into an extensive array of political issues and intersections between race, culture, and social justice.
“Joy Reid had such a pronounced presence on the network as a host and a regular commentator on the network’s other programs, she was able to reach a specific audience with her authenticity,” said Christian Thomas, a third-year multimedia journalist at Morgan State University.
In the coming weeks, several anchors will host in Reid’s place on a rotating basis. Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez, who currently serve as hosts on MSNBC’s other program “The Weekend,” have been confirmed to be the new hosts of a new ensemble program, per The Associated Press.
This announcement sparked outrage from supporters of the show, who emphasized the importance and impact that Reid’s voice gave to marginalized people in media today.
“The cancellation of Reid’s show set me and other Black women in media back. Black women tend to be very opinionated and be scrutinized for it,” said Courtney Franklin, a third-year journalism major, and English minor. “You would think that you could be opinionated and factual for a liberal news station but her firing shows that is not the case,”
Many people think the cancellation is due in part to the changing political climate following Trump’s election into office.
“I think the current political climate that we are in have made people afraid to stand out and say what they really mean, and MSNBC is just afraid at the potential backlash or potential lawsuit that could happen,” said Jones.
Reid has continued to show her love and gratitude, stating that she is “very proud of TheReidOut team,” and that she is not sorry for the things she stood for.
