Hampton University held its 45th annual High School Day this past Friday.
“High school day is one of the biggest events of the year,” said Layla Kennedy, a third-year mathematics major with a minor in English.
Students gearing up to graduate high school and go off to college, came from various different schools to see what the life of a Hampton student entails.
“It gives students a glimpse to see what is actually looks like to be a student at Hampton University, it falls on the weekday so the high schoolers can really see the environment,” said Jayla Eady, a second-year communicative sciences and disorders major, part of the
Student Recruitment team.
The Student Recruitment team, commonly referred to as SRT, are responsible for the different activities and stations that happened throughout the day. They greeted students with excitement as they arrived on campus.
“SRT was very planned out for high school day. We had several mandatory meetings so we can discuss the organization and the set up of high school days like different activities and assignments,” said Camile Johnson, a second-year strategic major and a member of SRT.
There are various assignments for SRT including people assigned to tours to various academic buildings on campus, greeters in front of campus, box people who give more information on the various academic buildings, and those at the cafeteria who help visitors find seating and food.
“It’s a very jam-packed day,” said Tyannah Cody, an interdisciplinary studies K-6 endorsement major and a member of SRT.
Different activities are set up for students to engage in such as the academic fair in the student center, an open house for the different academic buildings, and the opportunity to see different residential dorms. Students are able to enjoy the NPHC step show, and even a soundstage where they showcase different talents and skills.
High school day has been a part of the Hampton tradition for 45 years. It gives an opportunity to the students and their families to decide if they want to be a part of the Hampton family.
“I’m a Hampton legacy, my mom went here, and she tells me all the time that high school day was where she made up her mind that this is where she was going to be. And it was the same for me,” said Aedy.
