Hampton University students’ emotions were high as they watched the presidential election results on Tuesday night. The watch party, hosted by the HU’s student activities, the Student Government Association, and Black Girls Vote, allowed students to watch the election live.
The student center ballroom was packed with students and filled with anticipation before the outcome of the election was reported.
“I’m feeling really anxious about this election seeing all that is happening on both sides and what the results are from each state,” said Mya Johnson, a health science major.
While some students felt anxious about the election, others felt indifferent.
“I wouldn’t say I am nervous, but at this point, it is what it is”, said Jena Harvey, a second-year psychology major.
An innate sense of confidence and pride would not let up as poll results poured in from different states. Hampton Students stuck by the possibility of Harris making history that night.
“I would say that I am feeling pretty good about the election, I am feeling very hopeful. My fellow AKA sister is running mate Kamala Harris, so we’re going to hope for a win,” said Kaamia Harris, a third-year biochemistry major.
A few hours into the watch party, Kamala Harris was projected and win the states of New York, Virginia, New Jersey, Washington DC, Connecticut, and many more. These wins brought out even more hope and confidence in the presidential win of Kamala Harris.
“I feel hopeful. I feel confident. I really feel like Kamala Harris is going to take this after all the poll watching that I have been watching over the last few weeks, last few days, and even tonight,” said Richard Johnson, second year, political science major on the pre-law track, “Even though Donald Trump is a bug threat, I feel like she is going to win.”
As the night progressed, Harris would go on to win even more states such as Hawaii, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. The student center ballroom erupted into cheers and celebration as the possibility of the United State’s first black, Indian, and woman president came even closer to being true.
Even as students left the ballroom, uncertain of who the next president will be, they kept hope that Harris was going to win.
“I feel confident that she is going to win from all the celebrity endorsement that she got, and from the states that she was able to win,” said Mia Potts, a first-year biology pre-med major.
Former president Donald Trump would win the election with a majority vote, an outcome that many students had never imagined during the watch party.
