The next class of the Hampton University Freddye T. Davy Honors College was inducted last Friday . The Honors College, established in 1995, has been a respected institution within the entire community on campus.
“The ceremony was very nice. My family came, other people invited their families. We listened to a few speeches and some of the students even got up and spoke,” said a recent Honors College inductee, Reilly Washington. “We sang the alma mater and we celebrated. I enjoyed spending the time with my family and felt honored.”
The Hampton University website states that “The Freddye T. Davy Honors College was designed to cater towards students who possess a seriousness of academic purpose and a desire to be active rather than passive learners, who have an intellectual curiosity that supersedes an obsession with grades, who seek success rather than avoid failure, and who have the courage to demonstrate superior, ethical leadership in their chosen fields.”
The Honor College provides many tools to enhance the undergraduate experience for students, like individualized advising and support services, and an innovative curriculum.
Qualifications for students to be officially recognized as Honors students include a minimum GPA of 3.2, 12 hours of honors credit in both major and General Education courses, 150 hours of community service, an admission exam, and proof of application to at least one prestigious scholarship.
“Yes, it was kind of hard to apply and get in but I'm glad I did it in the end. I enjoyed the ceremony and having my parents and my brother there. It made me excited to see what comes next and do even better next year,” said Honors Student Janareah McDaniel. “Yes it was hard but it feels like I earned something.”
Students and parents alike gathered to celebrate their achievements and look forward to many more. Hampton University's President Williams was among the honored guests who attended the induction and celebrated alongside the esteemed students.
“I loved that they invited us to attend as well, and we [her and McDaniel’s younger brother] were able to have that moment with her. We both missed her so much and the fact that we were able to visit her and see campus for the purpose of celebrating her achievements is amazing. I’m so proud,” said McDaniel’s mother Shayla.
