Hampton University’s Greer Dawson Student Leadership Program held their annual SLP week last week. For the Student Leadership Program, this week marked students stepping up to the plate and becoming student leaders.
“The importance of SLP week is to allow students to showcase their skills, ideas, and perseverance for potential acceptance into the Greer Dawson Student Leadership Program,” said Chelsea Aygei, a third year biology pre-med major.
The theme of this year’s SLP week was Jigsaw. The student center was decorated from head to toe with references from the popular movie franchise, letting the students know that SLP was ready for the games to begin.
“I think we were able to execute our vision and message pretty well with the Stu decorations,” said Aygei.
The week started off with an interest meeting for new applicants interested in joining the organization, followed by a meet and greet, where applicants met the current members. SLP also held a scavenger hunt where applicants guessed the academic buildings based on clues they were given, HU’s popular “celebrity wannabe” show, and a test on everything applicants learned to end the week off.
“Students have a lot of tasks and different activities we do during the year like event planning, performances and other activities,” said Aygei.
The different activities and events were designed to mimic what students can expect upon being a part of the program, including SLP’s rigorous schedule.
“It shows future/incoming student leaders what it looks like to be a student leader especially during our busiest week, New Student Orientation week, with a hectic sleeping schedule and all the running around you’ll have to do,” said Kaelyn Covington, a third-year strategic communications major and member of SLP.
The week also helped determine who is truly dedicated to being a student leader.
“SLP week is also meant to vet which applicants truly abide by the principles by having them work through challenges by themselves and with other applicants,” said Covington.
SLP week turned out to be a big hit for the organization, with lots of students showing interest in becoming the future student leaders of Hampton University.
“I think SLP week 2025 went amazing! We had some of the largest turnout in history and an array of talented and unique applicants that will make wonderful additions to the program,” said Covington
