Following the last day of campaigning on April 9th, candidates for the Hampton University student election were then chosen through votes.
In terms of the Sophomore class office, Lana Asante is the elected President, Kamryn Gunn is the vice president, and Cori Thibodeaux is the elected secretary. The Mister and Miss Sophomore are returning, as well as Miss Sophomore Attendant. The new Parliamentarian is Lanaya Roberts, and the Representative to the organizational board is Kellan Lewis.
“I’m just so happy that the voters recognized my drive and desire to advocate for them. I appreciate QT13 for trusting me, and I feel reassured,” Lana Asante said following her redeeming victory after an unsuccessful campaign last semester. “I never thought twice about me running again, and this proves that that decision was not in vain. I’m confident in the support I've been shown, and I’m ready to serve my class.”
Students seemed confident in their votes, especially concerning the positions that remained vacant by the same candidates.
“Nassir [Mr. Sophomore] is loved among the class, yes, I would say so. He’s genuinely nice to everyone, he does the charity work, and he’s involved on campus. I don’t see him losing his position anytime soon,” first-year Finance major John May said.
Positions that were left unstable, like President and Vice President, have been filled by candidates students are hoping will do better.
“I was surprised about what happened with Brouke [former class President], I felt like he was a really good candidate. I liked his leadership, and I felt like he had good presence and was very approachable,” said first-year criminal justice major Janareah McDaniel. “I think Lana [Asante] will be a good replacement, and I believe she could lead well. I’m glad she got a chance for redemption this semester, because she really does seem dedicated and willing to take action for the class.”
Overall, students seemed generally satisfied with the results and hopeful about the next year with the newly elected officers.
“I actually appreciate the fact that we vote each semester, it makes sure that we can get a better alternative if someone fails to uphold their tasks for the class,” John May added. “As opposed to every four-year election in America, I like voting more often. But for now, I’m happy with the results.”
