What A Trump Presidency Could Mean for Eric Adams

New York Mayor Eric Adams is speculated to benefit from Donald Trump’s recent victory in the 2024 Presidential Election. Adams is currently facing charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, bribery and soliciting contributions from foreign nationals - charges that many sources believe Trump could help him avoid during his presidency.

Trump has made connections between Adams’ case and his own and even referred to the Justice Department as “dirty players” for the charges brought against Adams. He said at a charity dinner they both attended:

“We were persecuted, Eric. I was persecuted, and so are you, Eric.”

It is believed that Trump will replace Damien Williams, the current U.S. attorney for the Southern District who is the one prosecuting Adams upon his inauguration. His removal from the position would greatly improve the chances of Adams no longer facing charges. Should Adams be found guilty on all counts, he could face up to 45 years in prison.

Even if Trump decides not to replace the prosecutor, he could very well pardon Adams in the end once the trial plays out -  something he has been known to do. During his previous term, Trump pardoned a total of 70 people.

Hampton University political science professor Christina Greer says on the issue:

“If I am Eric Adams, I am sleeping a little more peacefully tonight knowing Donald Trump will be in charge and not Kamala Harris.”

Adams also made sure to cater to Trump throughout his campaign period and avoid expressing support for his opponent Kamala Harris. He defends Trump amid fellow democrats accusing him of being a fascist, which is just one instance of him speaking out in support of Trump.

When asked for her opinion on the Adams case, Bronx native Isabelle Ackon said:

“I do think people are being easier on him because we don’t really have Black leaders, but right is right and wrong is wrong.”

Many New Yorkers believe that Adams should be prosecuted to some extent and held responsible for his wrongdoings. In an interview, far-left mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said:

“New Yorkers need someone who will make the city and the state a beacon of hope in an otherwise despairing time. And to be worthy of hope it means, at the very least, you call out that which is creating despair. Not aligning yourself with it.”
