Several wildfires have caught ablaze on both the East and West Coasts of the United States. The fires are believed to be a result of unprecedented droughts across the U.S. as all 50 states have been experiencing periods of low precipitation since September.
The wildfires affecting parts of Southern California are relatively under control while ones affecting states like New York and New Jersey are more difficult to maintain, ABC News reports.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has officially declared a drought warning in the state after 530 wildfires were reported on the New Jersey-New York border since October of this year. Murphy’s office also released several water-conservation guidelines for New Jersey residents to help them navigate these difficult circumstances.
Some of the ten guidelines include taking shorter showers, turning off water faucets while brushing teeth, and only washing clothes and dishes when necessary.
“New Jersey is experiencing unprecedented weather conditions—as a result of climate change—that require us to take these precautionary measures now,” Gov. Murphy said.
To some, these guidelines may be seen as standard conservation measures when the country is not experiencing periods of low precipitation, but Gov. Murphy wants residents to emphasize how important they are to follow during these unprecedented weather conditions. “It can be challenging to adjust our daily habits, but it is imperative that we all work together, heed the guidance to conserve water, and use the utmost caution outdoors to reduce the risk of wildfire as dry conditions continue statewide,” Murphy said.
On the other side of the country, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to support fire response and recovery efforts for mountain fires in Ventura County, California.
“This executive order empowers the state to continue our swift action, cut through red tape, and mobilize essential resources to aid communities impacted by the Mountain Fire,” Newsom said, “Our top priority is protecting the health, safety, and well-being of all those affected and expediting the road to recovery.”
To stay safe during these ongoing weather conditions, residents of all affected states can check their respective governor’s websites for further updates.
