A woman was killed following an accidental shooting in a parking lot in the 5700 block of East Virginia Beach Boulevard on the night of October 24, per WAVY 10 News.

The woman, now identified as Semaj Richelle Coleman, was a student at Norfolk State University, majoring in Health Services Management, and was from Mollusk, Virginia.

According to WAVY 10 News, Norfolk Police Department officers received a report around 11:45 pm of a woman who walked into Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with fatal gunshot wounds. Coleman, 22, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jamiyah Davis, a Hampton University student from Norfolk, explained her feelings towards the devastating tragedy and her hopes for both the Norfolk and NSU community.

“I pray for the family of the victim, it’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear about what happened,” said Davis. “I hope the family gets the justice they deserve and have all their questions answered. As for Norfolk and the NSU community, I hope that everyone is remaining safe.”

A Newport News resident identified as Matthew B. Croslin, 23, was taken into custody by officers at the scene and has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm. He is being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.

Kylee Purnell, a student with a minor in criminal justice at Hampton University, details measures that she thinks need to be implemented to ensure the safety of HBCU students off campus as well.

“HBCU’s and colleges can ensure the safety of students on and off campus by using their economic power to create a ‘Safety Certification’ for local landlords,” said Purnell. “If a rental doesn’t meet high security standards like smart locks or integrated lighting, the college wouldn’t list them or allow students to use housing stipends there.”

At this time, a preliminary investigation has determined the shooting to be accidental.
