The Hampton Pirates celebrated a well-deserved victory against Norfolk State this past Saturday. Fans were eager to take part in the epic rivalry of the Battle of the Bay, spanning over 60 years, with a historic stadium sellout.
The Battle of the Bay holds a significant meaning to every individual in the 757, and bringing home the victory for Hampton is a source of pride for players.
Long snapper Jonathan Ward said, “I think it shows our resilience. Going into the game 1- 4, [we] really needed a big win, especially going into conference play. … Even at one point in the game, we were down 14-3, we were able to battle back. … We’re gonna fight no matter what, no matter what the situation is.”
For Hampton football players, the Battle of the Bay was more than just a game. It was a chance to show football fans everywhere that there are two good teams in the 757.
Starting quarterback, Braden Davis, said, “It was definitely one we wanted to bring home for Hampton. It’s a big game for the fans, the alumni, and everyone who is going to school here. Battle of the Bay, it’s two teams. It’s our rival.”
But this win does not define Hampton football’s season trajectory. Head Coach Trenton Boykin places special emphasis on how each game matters and how one win does not promise the next.
Coach Boykin said, “They believed in each other. They understood how big this game was for themselves and for the university, and for the community. We knew that it had to be about us.”
Beyond the scoreboard, major fan support came from media attention placed on this year’s Battle of the Bay with Michael Vick as Head Coach of Norfolk State’s team. Funnily enough, Kijafa Vick, Vick’s wife, is a Hampton alumna. According to Yahoo Sports, the pair placed a friendly bet on who would bring home the win in this year’s Battle of the Bay
Under the conditions of the bet, Vick sported a Hampton University cap in Norfolk’s pre-game press conference for their upcoming game against Wofford College.
Hampton football’s post-win fireworks show was a sight to behold, and Hampton players, coaches, and fans alike are still reeling from this electric win.
