Megan The Stallion faces backlash from fans and critics alike over the release of her new song “Lover Girl.”
On October 24th, Megan The Stallion released her latest single “Lover Girl.” The song shared the details of the rapper’s relationship with NBA player Klay Thompson. The track comes months after the couple were first linked together during a beach vacation in the summer of 2025.
“In terms of the song itself, I think that it shines a light on being in a healthy monogamous relationship, which is better than the other narratives that could be spread,” said Tobias Eckles, a fourth year in the five year MBA program and treasurer of Hampton University Ace program.
The song features a sample of an old-school R&B group, Total’s 1996 song “Kissing You.” For promotion of the song, Megan posted photos with Thompson on Instagram with the caption “LOVER GIRL.”
While Megan Thee Stallion has celebrated and embraced her new “Lover Girl” era, not everyone is feeling the same about the rapper’s latest song.
“It wasn’t the best first impression. It’s like when you listen to it more and more, it gets a little better, but it can be quite repetitive,” said Sierra Dew, a third-year computer engineering major, and secretary of the Hampton University Ace program.
Following the song’s release, critics ran to social media to share their thoughts and issue their opinions on her latest single. Some criticized Megan’s flow and delivery of the song calling it “cringey” and a “bad song.”
“I think the criticism people are giving to the song is crazy because it really isn’t a bad song. I don’t listen to a ton of Megan but in general I’d say it has a similar flow/sound to her other music which is fine because it’s her signature,” said Leah Williams, a third year music audio production major and head engineer/co-creative director of Hampton University Ace program
While took to social media to accuse Megan of being “too quick” to share about her personal life, others defended her artistic expression.
“Overall, I feel like people are doing the most, like God forbid a girl is in love with her man and put it in her own song,” said Williams.
Days after receiving backlash about her new song, Megan took to her social media livestream and urged her true supporters to ignore the negativity claiming that she is happy in her relationship.
