Summer Walker released her third studio album, “Finally Over It,” on November 14th. The album signifies the end of the Over It trilogy, preceded by “Over It” and “Still Over It.
Commercially, “Finally Over It” was a career low for Walker, with “Still Over It” being the most successful in the trilogy. The album ties a knot on Walker’s trilogy, encouraging listeners to get rid of their emotional baggage and move on with her.
“Despite it sounding like I’m finally over it, like, ‘Oh, she’s really mad now,’ it’s more so, like, a different era. Putting down the baggage, putting down any stress, and just moving towards a better life,” Summer Walker said on the Jennifer Hudson Show.
She promoted the album by driving a dump truck around Atlanta, giving fans a chance to get rid of all their exes' old belongings, reflecting the project’s breakup theme.
The cover art also played a part in the rollout, showing Walker posing as the bride of the older suitor she was first photographed with back in September. Some fans see the cover as Summer poking fun at the idea of “being over it,” while others view it as a symbol of finding stability and peace, even in unexpected places.
The album was met with mixed reviews, some fans believing it has album of the year potential while others say it falls short compared to Walker’s other projects.
“I don't think Summer pushed herself artistically on this album compared to her first two,” Zoe Williams, a first-year journalism major, said. “Her first two albums had a lot less features, and she had more songs where it was just her, meaning that it was just her being vulnerable to us and sharing her story with us. I don’t think this project was a strong conclusion to the trilogy.”
Since releasing the album, she has dropped two deluxe versions, showing she’s still actively expanding the project.
