A Week of Reflection: Palm Sunday Ushers in Holy Week Worldwide

By Leyah Jackson

Palm Sunday marked the start of Holy Week for Christians all over the world. A week dedicated to prayer and reflection ends with celebration on Easter Sunday.

“This time of prayer and worship means slowing down and taking a step back to reevaluate my relationship with God—especially in college when everything is rushed and sometimes you feel overwhelmed. It's important to remember to put God in the center of your life through worship and prayer,” said freshman biology major and leader of one campus ministry small group, Jaida Lubandi.

In Spain, dozens of Palm Sunday celebrations took place last Sunday in celebration of the holy day. The Andalusian cities of Seville and Malaga are known for their grand processions, featuring decorated floats, attracting thousands of locals and tourists each year.

“Palm Sunday resonates with me mindfully as it highlights that the same people who cheer for you one day might not have your back the next,” said first-year psychology major and co-leader of campus ministry Proverbs 31 Small Group, Kira Pugh.

In the small Cordoba town Cabra, 12 worshippers portrayed Jesus’ apostles by wearing masks that bore their likeness.

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem following his 40 day exile, days before his crucifixion, and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. HU campus ministry hosted their weekly 7 p.m Bible study this Wednesday where they discussed

“Holy Week is important for young people because it encourages us to understand and reflect on the reason for the season. Jesus’ life being fulfilled from Old Testament prophecies, to Him truly living out the lessons He preached, to being unlawfully sentenced to crucifixion, then finally His coming again which is why we can truly know God,” Pugh continued.

HU Chapel is hosting 11 am morning service as usual this Sunday. Other churches in the area, such as Greater Emmanuel Temple, are celebrating Resurrection Sunday as well. Stay tuned for the Annual Spring Revival hosted by HU Campus Ministry later this month April 22nd-April 24th at 7pm in the Student Center Ballroom.
