First U.S. Fighter Jet Downed In Iran

By Sydney Johnson

A U.S. Air Force plane was shot down in Iran last week, which has not happened to a U.S. aircraft in this ongoing conflict until now. The altercation resulted in an airman going missing, leading to a two-day search.

The F-15 Strike Eagle operated by these airmen was downed by Iranian forces on April 4th. The pilot was reported to have flown the plane out of Iranian airspace before ejecting, and received rescue from two US MIlitary helicopters. Yet, there was no word from U.S. officials regarding the safety of the second man aboard the aircraft.

The rescue mission for the second airmen who is a colonel and the aircraft's weapons officer, lasted two days while U.S. forces attempted to find and retrieve him from Isfahan, Iran. The airman was rescued near an airport by three Air Force special operations transport planes, according to The Guardian.

U.S. forces reportedly communicated with him via encrypted radio to determine his exact location. The extended timeframe of his rescue is due to military drones attacking Iranian forces in the area. The original two transport planes sent for the airmen malfunctioned and self-destructed to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands, according to AP News. This led the other three transport planes to carry the airman and his rescuers out of Iran.

All of these events follow Donald Trump claiming the U.S. has “beaten and completely decimated Iran” in a national address two days prior.

This is the first U.S. aircraft to be shot down in the war; however, Iran has made multiple unsuccessful claims of shooting down piloted enemy aircraft throughout the conflict. The downing of the F-15 was the first time they used television to enlist the public in searching for a U.S. pilot, with the promise of a reward, according to AP News.

Dylan Paddy, a Hampton University student whose father served in the U.S. military, provided valuable insight on the experience of having a loved one deployed.

“I couldn't imagine if that was my dad, like, him being completely alone and lost. But I feel like the only reason the attack was so publicized is that people knew about the plane being shot cause soldiers go missing a lot of the time abroad.”

In Trump's Truth Social post following the rescue, he wrote, "Keep the oil, anyone?" in reference to Iran, rather than mentioning the status of the fighter jet operators. This leaves citizens questioning the true motivation behind U.S. involvement in this conflict.
