The US Secret Service fatally shot a trespasser who breached the perimeter of Trump’s Mar a Lago residence in the early hours of Sunday morning. The intruder was armed while on the president’s Palm Beach, Florida property and the president was not there at the time of the trespassing.

Sheriff of Palm Beach County Ric Bradshaw stated that two Secret Service agents and a deputy under Bradshaw arrived at the north gate of the property around 1:30 am EST following a security detail informing them there was an intruder in the perimeter, according to the Guardian. At the site, they confronted a white male possessing a shotgun and a gasoline can.

“He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with him, at which time he put down the gas can [and] raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” said Bradshaw, per the Guardian. “At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat. He is now deceased.”

Bradshaw stated that no law enforcement present at the scene obtained any injuries and was unable to say whether or not the intruder’s shotgun was loaded.

The Associated Press reported later that Sunday afternoon that the intruder killed had been identified by investigators as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin. He was from North Carolina and was reported missing a few days prior by his family.

This incident has raised conversation around proper security measures when it comes to high profile figures.

“While the Secret Service agents were swift with responding to the intruder, what stood out to me about this situation was the vulnerability of the entrance gate being exploited,” said Zephaniah Dangerfield, a first-year computer science major with a concentration in cybersecurity. “The more layered security is, the better … strong security relies on both technology and people, and that’s an important factor to consider when aiming to prevent incidents like this one.”

Trump has had previous trespassing issues in reference to his properties. In one 2019 incident, a Chinese woman entered the perimeter of Mar a Lago carrying multiple cellphones and a computer hard drive. In a 2024 incident, a male carrying a rifle was seen near Trump’s golf course, aiming his weapon through a perimeter fence.
