Stefon Diggs, wide receiver for the New England Patriots, faces a court appearance just days after the team’s Super Bowl loss. On top of legal troubles, rumors of a possible breakup with Grammy-winning singer Cardi B add to the drama surrounding the player’s personal life.
Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium saw the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots 29-13. Diggs finished the game with three receptions for 37 yards on three targets. Post-game, Diggs shared that he was “super proud of his teammates” despite the loss, according to the Patriots Press Conference.
Diggs was originally scheduled for arraignment on January 23 on charges including felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery. However, the hearing was postponed until Friday, February 13, less than a week after the Patriots’ Super Bowl defeat.
Adding to the whirlwind, rumors of a split with singer Cardi B surfaced shortly after the Super Bowl. Fans noticed that the pair unfollowed each other on social media, and Cardi B had removed photos of her and Diggs from her page.
Before the big game, ESPN caught up with Cardi B, who offered just two words to her boyfriend: “Good luck.”
Some fans believe Diggs’ off-field challenges shouldn’t overshadow his on-field performance.
“I feel that it shouldn’t affect how people see Stefon Diggs because people can separate the art from the artist, so you should separate the plays from the player.” Maryah Smith, a first-year psychology major, said. “Diggs is just a New England Patriots team member. I do feel like it might've affected how he played as in aggression, or his mind might've been clouded.”
As Diggs prepares for his court appearance, fans and analysts alike will be watching both his personal life and professional performance, wondering how off-field stress might shape the next chapter of his career.
