Last week USA Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams defeated Canada in the Winter Olympics to bring home Gold.
Last Thursday, February 19th, the US women’s hockey team faced Canada’s hockey team in a 2-to-1 overtime thriller. Hilary Knight and Megan Keller scored the goals to deliver America gold in the event. This was the third time in history that the women’s hockey team won gold at the Olympics, with the second being 2018 and the first being 1998.
That Sunday, February 22nd, the US men’s hockey team faced Canada’s hockey team in another 2-to-1 overtime thriller. Jack Hughes and Matt Boldy scored the goals to deliver America gold in the event. This was also the third time the men’s team took home gold, with the first being in 1960 and the second being in 1980. However, this was the first time both teams won gold in the same year.
"There's always new adversities, new challenges. Every single player in that game went through so many things. ... It's a journey, the whole lifetime of work. I'm just a part of that. I think every single person in that game can be proud. Obviously, a great game, and we had the better outcome, but just a great game between USA and Canada,” said Hughes after the game.
But the game was not without controversy. As the men’s US team celebrated the victory, President Donald Trump facetimed the team and joked about having to invite the women’s team to the White House. The men’s team laughed at the joke, which some believed to be a sexist reaction from the team and a statement from the President.
"I thought it was sort of a distasteful joke, and unfortunately, that is overshadowing a lot of the success, the success of just women at the Olympics carrying for Team USA and having amazing gold medal feats," said Hilary Knight, the captain of the women’s team.
