tailgating the Hampton way

Hampton University’s Homecoming Tailgate took place this Saturday, wrapping up an amazing Homecoming Week. Students, alumni, and Hampton fans alike came together to honor Hampton’s legacy.
At Hampton, tailgating is more than just a pre-game event. It’s a tradition that connects generations and celebrates the HBCU experience. Hampton University alumni and students shared what the tradition of tailgating means for them.
Alumna Bella May said, “Tailgating is a rich part of not only Hampton’s legacy but for all HBCUs. It’s a time where alumni come together to enjoy the festivities of seeing each other…Tailgating helps preserve Hampton’s legacy and traditions for future students by giving them an experience to look forward to. To me, it’s the best part of game day.”
The same spirit of connection is felt by current students who see tailgating as more than just a social gathering.
Senior Desirae Nance said, “I think tailgating is an event that brings Black communities together, specifically from HBCUs, and Black people from across our country…A typical tailgate sounds like the band in the background, good music playing, good food being cooked, and you have a happy and joyful feeling because you’re around your friends and your family.”
For freshmen who are experiencing Hampton Homecoming for the first time, they are seeing opportunities to learn from those who came before them.
Sophomore Brianna Wynn said, “I would say the tailgate is an amazing opportunity to network with a lot of alumni and learn from their Hampton experience…. It's also a great time to connect with people in your own class and meet people that you wouldn't normally meet in a classroom setting outside, and build new friendships.”
The Homecoming Tailgate is not just a fun event, but a symbol of Hampton pride and legacy. It’s a time for all Hampton Pirates to come together and ignite the Blue and White!
